Spiders

Spiders invade your home through windows, doors, and crevices. They can also be carried in by our own two hands on items like firewood or buckets. Spiders cause unsightly cobwebs, and the species that live in the Hampton Roads area have bites that can be painful and sometimes require medical attention.

Types of Spiders in Hampton Roads

There are many types of spiders that live in our area, but the three you need to look out for are brown recluse spiders, wolf spiders, and black widow spiders.

  • Brown Recluse Spider
Their colors are light to dark brown with a dark brown violin marking on its back. Brown Recluse Spiders are usually found outdoors living in wood piles. They can also be found in dark, storage areas. Their bites are painful and can cause an ulcerating sore.
  • Wolf Spider
These spiders are fairly large, and are commonly found indoors during winter. Wolf Spiders do not spin webs; instead, they roam around looking for their prey. Their bites are actually not poisonous to humans but may cause allergic reactions.
  • Black Widow Spider
They are black with a red hourglass on the back. Black Widow Spiders spin their webs at ground level and are usually found in enclosed areas such as boxes or wood debris, so inspect firewood and any other items before you bring them inside. The Black Widow’s venom is a neurotoxin and causes extreme pain especially to children and the elderly.
